Abstract

In this book, Graham Oppy examines arguments for and against the existence of God. He shows that none of these arguments is powerful enough to change the minds of reasonable participants in debates on the question of the existence of God. His conclusion is supported by detailed analyses of the arguments as well as by the development of a theory about the purpose of arguments and the criteria that should be used in judging whether or not arguments are successful. Oppy discusses the work of a wide array of philosophers, including Anselm, Aquinas, Descartes, Locke, Leibniz, Kant, Hume and, more recently, Plantinga, Dembski, White, Dawkins, Bergman, Gale and Pruss.

Abstract

This book considers John Calvin's interpretation of the Pauline epistles, discussing his interpretive method and the link between biblical interpretation and correct doctrine. It introduces a division between doctrinal hermeneutics and textual exegetical rules clarifying Calvin's relationship to the antecedent and subsequent traditions. The book portrays Calvin as a theologian for whom the doctrinal and exegetical tasks cohered, especially in the context of the Church in the Reformations. The first section presents the division between hermeneutical principles and exegetical rules, demonstrating each in Calvin's commentaries. The second section considers the coherence of Calvin's theological, exegetical and historical efforts. The text is grounded by the inclusion of many instances of Calvin's interpretation, and his reflections on the nature of biblical interpretation.

Abstract

This collection focusses on the proposition "that theology is at its best when it is political, and politics is saved from a secular ideology when it listens to a theological critique." The editor draws parallels between the Canaanite period of Israelite history and the "Liberal Possessive Individualism" that he sees dominating Canadian ideology. Following William Hordern's essay defining political theology, economist Abraham Rotstein examines "The Apocalyptic Tradition: Luther and Marx" and philosopher Kai Nielsen, writing from a atheistic and socialist perspective, asks, "Do We Need a Political Theology?" Dorothee Sölle, eminent student of political theology, writes on "Theology and Liberation.": Two Quebec theologians, Yves Vaillancourt and Guy Bourgeault, give a Christian-Marxist analysis of "Church and Worker in Quebec." Roger Hutchinson provides a concluding summary statement. Responses by Gregory Baum, Patrick Kerans, and the editor enhance the collection. The volume makes clear in the increasing importance of political theology in the study of religion and theneed for increased dialogue between theology and politics.

Abstract

In shaping the modern academy and in setting the agenda of modern Christian theology, few institutions have been as influential as the German universities of the nineteenth century. This book examines the rise of the modern German university from the standpoint of the Protestant theological faculty, focusing especially on the University of Berlin (1810), Prussia's flagship university in the nineteenth century. In contradistinction to historians of modern higher education who often overlook theology, and to theologians who are frequently inattentive to the social and institutional contexts of religious thought, Thomas Albert Howard argues that modern university development and the trajectory of modern Protestant theology in Germany should be understood as interrelated phenomena.
